This page of the website is about musical and inspirational visual art. When I say this, I don’t mean the performance or improvised composition of live music as an art form. Although this is indeed something that I love and have spent my life doing. I’m talking about tangible visual art.
We all need to make a living. One of the best things we can do is, or at least try to do, is make a living doing what we like. Sometimes however turning our cherished labours of love into our bread and butter can begin to sap the fun out of it. For me the answer is to embrace the variety (the spice of life!) and inevitability that we are all being creative all the time!

When I have asked myself why do I do what I do over the years I eventually realised what it was that has held me to the course of art as an occupation. It certainly isn’t the money, at least in my case. Music performance art is an unstable career. Teachers everywhere are unfortunately undervalued. Composition, transcription and even instrument repair and restoration (and visual art) are all also added in out of necessity and woven together to create a single platform of stability and (perhaps the illusion of) safety.
In any case after the tug of war for years with the spiritual and the commercial, I see that the overriding intrinsic motivation is the need to create. Not just the enjoyment, but the need.
Over the years as an itinerate “musical operative” (Jack of all trades in the music business) I have come to see that a very many of the things that we all do require an element of creativity if not a creative art.
Playing, teaching, writing, making guitars, building furniture, shopfitting, mechanics and engineers, shopkeepers, dustmen, doctors, lawyers, …etc. The “creative section” of our brains' resources are automatically engaged as part of the daily navigation of life. We start being creative from the moment we wake from sleep really. We have to make decisions and start problem solving even if in a minute way just to get up and get dressed!
